Linux is the best-known and most-used open source Linux Based operating system. Linux is a Kernel.
The Linux kernel is a Unix-like computer operating system kernel. It is used world-wide: the Linux operating system is based on it and deployed on both traditional computer systems such as personal computers and servers, usually in the form of Linux distributions, and on various embedded devices such as routers and NAS appliances. The Android operating system for tablet computers, smartphones and smartwatches is also based on the the Linux kernel.
There are some of the popular mainstream Linux distributions are Debian, Ubuntu,Linux Mint, Fedora, openSUSE, Arch Linux and Gentoo, together with commercial Red Hat Enterprise Linux and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server distributions. Linux distributions include the Linux kernel, supporting utilities and libraries, and usually a large amount of application software to fulfill the distribution’s intended use.
History and Deployment
For Reduce the Limitation of UNIX (Minix) like
- Clone or closed based operating System (It was not open source )
- Hardware dependent
- High Cost etc
in 1985 “Richard Matthew Stallman” Father of Open Source ” found and Developed a Organization, name is GPL “General Public License” Free (Open Source) and added a Project GNU “GNU is a recursive acronym for “GNU’s Not Unix!“, chosen because GNU’s design is Unix-like, but differs from Unix by being free software and containing no Unix code. The GNU project includes an operating system kernel, GNU HURD, which was the original focus of the Free Software Foundation (FSF).”
In 1990 “Linus Torvalds” began the development of the Linux kernel on MINIX and applications written for MINIX were also used on Linux and overcome the limitation of UNIX . Made it as open source , registered in GPL Organization Later, Linux matured and further Linux kernel development took place on Linux systems. GNU applications also replaced all MINIX components, because it was advantageous to use the freely available code from the GNU Project with the fledgling operating system; code licensed under the GNU GPL can be reused in other projects as long as they also are released under the same or a compatible license. Torvalds initiated a switch from his original license, which prohibited commercial redistribution, to the GNU GPL. Developers worked to integrate GNU components with the Linux kernel, making a fully functional and free operating system.
Deployment of Linux around in 1991, Today Million users are used Linux (Kernel) Based Operating System.
Note: Linus Torvalds had wanted to call his invention Freax, a portmanteau of “free” , “freak”, and “x” (as an allusion to Unix). But at last the name of Linux know as based on the name of “Linus Torvalds” But Here one thing is different that last word “X” it shows UNIX-Like kernel but Open Source.
